Few be the hours of daylight as

 the winter solstice draws near
high be the visibility
for the air is so clear

Chilly the zephyr
disturbing the leaves
absent the birds
from now barren trees

Changeable the weather
as clouds scuttle by
rain, ice and snow
an occasional mince pie

Joyous our anniversary
that falls on the fourth
three weeks to the big day
cold plunges from the north

Schools closing their doors
for a well earned winter break
that gluttonous holiday
too much Christmas cake!
